Expanded VA Loan Eligibility Criteria for Spouses of Veterans

Surviving spouses of veterans may apply for a VA loan if eligibility requirements are met.

Not long ago, only spouses of those who had died of military-related causes were permitted to apply for VA loans to achieve the American dream of homeownership.

However, these eligibility criteria for surviving military spouses have since expanded with the passage of a law in 2012 known as The Honoring America’s Veterans and Caring for Camp Lejeune Families Act (H.R. 1627).

More Eligibility Options for Surviving Spouses

With the passage of this law, the Department of Veterans Affairs offered updated eligibility requirements for the spouses of veterans.

Today, you may apply for a VA home loan if you are the:

  • Un-remarried spouse of a veteran who died while in service or from a service-related disability
  • Spouse of a Servicemember missing in action or a prisoner of war
  • Surviving spouse who remarries on or after attaining age 57, and on or after December 16, 2003
  • Surviving spouses of certain totally disabled veterans whose disability may not have been the cause of death
